Clifton Firefighters raise money by pulling an Army Tank in Fundraiser for Wounded Soldiers
Date: September 12, 2010 - 8am
Location: 1100 Clifton Avenue
- From the Clifton Journal- |
| Residents, City employees, firefighters and more will
flex their muscles Sunday, Sept. 12, as they attempt to pull
an 80,000-pound armored tank to benefit soldiers and
veterans. |
| Each 20-person team must donate a minimum $1,500 by Aug. 21 to
compete in the rain or shine event, which was organized by the patriotic
Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. |
Event chairman and St. Philip the Apostle Knights of
Columbus Council Chancellor John Hughes said 80 percent of donations will go
toward the Wounded Warrior Project, five percent will go toward local
veteran's organizations and 15 percent will go to Knights of Columbus
charities.
With the anticipation of roughly 20 teams and 400 competitors,
Hughes said he expects to collect a "bare minimum of $30,000," but added he
thinks "we'll do better than that."
The premiere Clifton Tank Pull, which begins at 8 a.m. and
goes through 4 p.m., will see teams vying for pride and first, second and
third place trophies in two tank-pulling competitions. Teams will first
compete to pull the tank 12 feet in the fastest time. Following, groups will
have two minutes to pull the tank as far as 12 feet with the lowest combined
team weight – sidelined members may jump in and help if need be. Trophies
will also be presented for the teams who raise the most money by noon on the
day of the event, Hughes said, adding nonparticipants may also contribute
through that time.
Hughes said Clifton and the state granted permission to hold
the event on Clifton Avenue, with entertainment, food and beverages being
featured on the corner of Clifton Avenue and St. James Place. Check-in will
begin at 8 a.m., said Hughes, and a brief trophy ceremony will commence
around 3 p.m. following the day's events. Hughes added City officials and
military will be present and a closing ceremony will feature color guards
and a bagpipe band.
Hughes said the idea for a benefit event came after seeing
young soldiers who needed help after returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
